چکیده

The paper presents a wordnet expansion algorithm, which is based on lexicosemantic relations extracted from large text corpora. We do not assume that the extracted relation instances (i.e. word pairs) are described by probabilities. Thus, results produced by any method, including pattern-based and Distributional Semantics approaches can be used. The algorithm is based on a general spreading activation model. Support for word-to-word semantic associations is first mapped on the existing wordnet structure. Next, the support is spread over the wordnet network in order to find attachment areas for a new word. Evaluation and comparison with other approaches in experiments on Princeton WordNet 3.0 is presented.

Semi-supervised methods for expanding psycholinguistics norms by integrating distributional similarity with the structure of WordNet

In this work, we present two complementary methods for the expansion of psycholinguistics norms. The first method is a randomtraversal spreading activation approach which transfers existing norms onto semantically related terms using notions of synonymy, hypernymy, and pertainymy to approach full coverage of the English language. The second method makes use of recent advances in distributional ...

Two Kinds of Hypernymy Faults in WordNet: the Cases of Ring and Isolator

Hypernymy is the key relation that serves to form the ontology of the noun and verb concepts in WordNet and provides a common way of making induction along the hypernymy tree for the NLP researchers. Howerver, we find 2 kinds of abnormal hypernymy in WordNet 2.0, the cases of ring and isolator for short, which can largely harass the reasoning and eventually lead to errors.

Semi-Automatic Ontology Extension Using Spreading Activation

This paper describes a system to semi-automatically extend and refine ontologies by mining textual data from the Web sites of international online media. Expanding a seed ontology creates a semantic network through co-occurrence analysis, trigger phrase analysis, and disambiguation based on the WordNet lexical dictionary. Spreading activation then processes this semantic network to find the mos...

Mapping it differently: A solution to the linking challenges

This paper reports the work of creating bilingual mappings in English for certain synsets of Hindi wordnet, the need for doing this, the methods adopted and the tools created for the task. Hindi wordnet, which forms the foundation for other Indian language wordnets, has been linked to the English WordNet. To maximize linkages, an important strategy of using direct and hypernymy linkages has bee...

Detecting Asymmetric Semantic Relations in Context: A Case-Study on Hypernymy Detection

We introduce WHIC1, a challenging testbed for detecting hypernymy, an asymmetric relation between words. While previous work has focused on detecting hypernymy between word types, we ground the meaning of words in specific contexts drawn from WordNet examples, and require predictions to be sensitive to changes in contexts. WHIC lets us analyze complementary properties of two approaches of induc...
